Multiverse maintains a year round community via Discord, a FREE web, desktop and mobile app. This is a great place to keep the con-drop at bay and stay connected with your new friends all year long.

Never used Discord before? No worries! On this page, we’ve listed tips for new users.

A Discord pro? We’ve got guidelines for you, as well. Scroll down past the “new Discord users” section!

NEW DISCORD USERS

About Signing Up:

If you have never used Discord before, it is very easy to create an account and join the server. When you click the Server Invite Link, you will be given the option to make a new account. Your account just needs a “display name,” an email, and a password. Once you have done that, you will be joined to our server.

About Your Display Name:

Your display name is, well, how your name will be displayed on the server! If you are a professional, academic, guest, vendor, etc, we ask that you use the same name that we use on our programming materials. If you have room, you may also add your genre, pronouns, or (if you’re feeling like a goofball) emojis. Examples:

  • Alan Smithee (Film Director)

  • Alan Smithee (Horror Film Director)

  • Alan Smithee (Vendor, B-Movies Inc)

  • Alan Smithee (He/Him) 🐲

If you are an attendee, feel free to use whatever nickname you like. Just keep it PG-13 and tasteful! Remember, our Code of Conduct always applies.

About Channels:

Discord is broken into Channels. On a computer, these appear on the left hand side. On mobile, you will see these by swiping right.

When you first log in, you will only see channels called “#welcome” and “#rules.” You will land in the "#welcome" channel where a bot named "MEE6" will welcome you to the server. Over in the channel area, click on #rules, where MEE6 has a list of our server rules and a link to our general code of conduct. Acknowledge this by clicking the Green Check Mark at the bottom:

Once you have done this, you have joined our server, and the rest of the channels open up.

Any channel title with a # next to it is a text chat; any channel title with a speaker icon next to it is a video-enabled voice chat (kind of like Zoom or Skype).

Other Fun & Useful Stuff:

To tag a person on the server (poke them with a notification), use “@” and then begin typing their display name. For example: “@Chelsea” will bring up “@ Chelsea ‘Bean’ Eckert,” our comms director’s username. Please don’t overuse this feature—it can be irritating if you spam someone too much!

Also, look down at the chat bar (it’ll say “message <insert channel title here>”). Each one of the symbols on the chat bar represent something cool:

  • The plus allows you to upload photos from your phone or desktop. Perfect if you need to share that adorable picture of your cat chewing on your new book release! (Again, please keep all photos/pictures/memes PG-13 and tasteful.)

  • Don’t worry about the present—it will lead you to a window where you can gift a Discord subscription service.

  • The gif button allows you to search for the best gifs in the known universe and post them to the chat.

  • And the smiley button shows you all the emotes you can use in the server. We’ve got all the emojis you’d have on your phone, as well as dozens of other special ones. From Spider-Man to pride flag hearts to Rainbow Dash to memes, we’ve curated a lovely selection of funnies for you to punctuate your text.

About Your Display Name:

If you are a professional, academic, guest, vendor, etc, we ask that you use the same name that we use on our programming materials. If you have room, you may also add your genre, pronouns, or (if you’re feeling like a goofball) emojis. Examples:

  • Stede Bonnet (Pirate)

  • Stede Bonnet (Gentleman Pirate)

  • Stede Bonnet (Restaurateur, Blackbeard’s Bar & Grill)

  • Stede Bonnet (He/Him) 🐲

There will also be self-assignable roles for things like genre etc as well.

If you are an attendee, feel free to use whatever nickname you like. Just keep it PG-13 and tasteful!

About Joining The Server:

Soon as you are on the server, you need to go to the "#rules" channel. Hit the green checkmark on the post there to acknowledge our server rules and convention code of conduct. Once you do this, you will receive the appropriate level of access to the server (attendee, professional guest, etc) and won't get auto-kicked when you close your app/browser. Have fun!

GENERAL SERVER GUIDANCE

The Multiverse Discord has several sections.

The "Welcome" section features rules, help, and basic info. Remember, if you need help, you can always tag ‘@moderator” in a message in any channel, and someone will help you.

The Social Channels section contains text chat channels about all sorts of stuff, from conventions to food & drink to cool science stuff to paranormal discussions.

The Real Reason We’re Here area is the place for channels about memes, pet pictures, cosplay photos, and opportunities to shamelessly promote yourself and your work.

The Geek Out section is focused on areas of fandom, with text chats for fantasy, science fiction, horror, art, writing, gaming (ttrpg and video gaming), anime, and comics.

The Hangout Spaces area has audio & video channels where you can get together with friends and shoot the breeze, do co-working sessions, share music, or whatever else keeps you in touch with your people.

We hope this helps clarify some stuff, Multiversians! Party on (safely)!
